How do insurance companies calculate depreciation?

Commonly by comparing an item's age with its expected useful life, sometimes adjusted for condition. Ask the insurer which method and life expectancy were used on your estimate.

Is there a maximum on depreciation?

Many estimating tools cap depreciation, often somewhere between 50% and 80%, but caps vary. This tool lets you set the cap you want to test.
